Luca Boni is an illustrator and concept artist based in Johannesburg. He has worked at art agencies in Johannesburg and Cape Town, producing breathtaking visual iconography for various projects, while simultaneously working on his  own quirky independent output. Luca is a partially self-taught artist, having studied 3D animation. Yet it has been primarily through working with influential illustrators and animators, while tirelessly honing his drawing skills on his own – both digitally and on paper – that he has developed a beautifully singular style of digital painting. Luca spent his early childhood in Florence, and then relocated to South Africa, which has infused his work with multifaceted references. With allusions as disparate as the old masters and primary coloured LEGO blocks, Luca creates characters that are at once outlandish and relatable, and scenarios that are both humorous and affecting. He is a surprising new virtuoso in the field of painting with pixels.

More about Luca’s process

“I mainly paint in Photoshop with a drawing tablet, but sometimes I'll use good old pen and paper for the initial sketch," Luca explains. "Every piece starts off a little different. Sometimes I'll doodle until I see something I want to try out, but it depends on what feels right. There aren't many boundaries when it comes to digital painting. It could start off by just forming an object with basic shapes and colours or it could go straight into a painting from the line art... Objectively, I see my style as being quite diverse and adaptable according to the requirements of the job. I would say, without a doubt, that a massive amount of my inspiration comes from other artists. I'm influenced by everything and anything, especially the strangeness of people.”
